If You Have a Broken Bone...
Our fracture specialists can assess and treat your injury. And we'll see you within one business day.
Total knee replacement (also known as total knee arthroplasty) is an effective treatment for chronic and debilitating knee arthritis.
At University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), our knee specialists will help you determine if you should continue non-surgical treatment or if it's time to proceed with a knee replacement.
A knee is a hinge joint. In a total knee replacement, metal is used to cap the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). An advanced plastic insert is then placed between the metal parts to replace the arthritic joint. This way, the damaged surfaces are replaced while leaving the majority of the bone around the knee intact.

Knee replacements at University of Maryland are performed with muscle-sparing, tissue-sparing approaches together with multiple options for your pain control regimen. This allows our patients to walk the same day of surgery. Medically suitable patients are eligible to go home later the same day.
