Rhinoplasty, also commonly known as a nose job or nose reshaping, is a surgical procedure that can alter the shape and appearance of the nose. The nose occupies a central position of the face, and the size and shape has a great impact on an individual's appearance.

Who should get a rhinoplasty?

Patients seek rhinoplasty surgery for enhancement of the appearance of their nose. This surgery may be appropriate for individuals that are unhappy with the nose they were born with, or with the way their nose has changed with age. Also, this surgery may address a prior injury that may have distorted the nose, and breathing difficulties such as with a deviated septum. This procedure can address both cosmetic and functional issues of the nose.

Are people able to tell when patients have had rhinoplasty surgery?

The goal of rhinoplasty surgery is to bring the nose in harmony with the rest of the face. Depending on the extent of change, people may comment that patients look better. Most may not notice that the nose is different.

Where will the surgery occur?

The surgery will be performed in a surgical suite under the supervision of an anesthesiologist and the plastic surgeon performing the procedure.

What should patients bring the day of surgery?

During pre-operative visits, the surgeon will provide detailed information on what to expect throughout the procedure, as well as items to bring on the day of surgery. Bring ID for registration and pack loose, comfortable clothing. Bring eye glasses, if necessary, and leave jewelry and other personal belongings at home.

How should patients prepare the day of surgery?

Patients interested in rhinoplasty will be carefully instructed on steps to take before and after surgery to maximize their overall comfort, safety, and results. Do not eat or drink anything prior to surgery, and do not wear any facial makeup on the day of procedure. Have a friend or family member drive to and from the surgery, and have someone available to stay with the patient for 24 hours post-procedure.

How would you describe the surgical procedure?

Most of the incisions for rhinoplasty are invisible and made inside the nose. The incisions made on the outside of the nose are placed in well-hidden areas and tend to heal nicely. Thick or raised scars are extremely rare after rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is performed by reshaping the cartilage and bone under the skin of the nose. After these deep structures are reshaped, then the skin is re-draped over the new framework to create a more pleasing appearance. A small plastic splint is applied to the outside of the nose to minimize swelling and to help maintain the new shape while the nose heals.

What happens after surgery? Do patients stay in the hospital?

Upon completion of the surgery, patients are monitored in the post-anesthesia recovery area until they feel well enough for discharge home. Rhinoplasty is typically done as an outpatient procedure, so an overnight stay is generally not needed.

How much time should patients take off from work?

Most rhinoplasty patients can go back to work one week after surgery. At that time, the dressing is removed from the nose and make-up may be worn on the face.

What should patients expect during recovery?

The nose heals remarkably quickly. A small amount of swelling and bruising is expected after rhinoplasty, but most of it will diminish within the first week after the procedure. Keeping the head elevated will minimize swelling. A splint is typically worn on top of the nose for one week after the procedure. It is very important not to blow the nose and to avoid any impact to the nose while the structures inside and out are healing.

Will patients need touch-ups or maintenance procedures in the future?

Touch-ups are typically not needed with this procedure.

Will insurance cover this procedure?

Elective cosmetic surgery is typically not covered by insurance companies. But, any component of the surgery aimed at improving nasal function or correcting any traumatic nasal deformity may be partly or entirely reimbursable. Discussion with the plastic surgery team and the insurance carrier will help determine patient eligibility. The plastic surgery team does offer financing plans.
