Medicines

Be sure the hyperbaric nurse knows ahead of time what prescription and over the counter drugs you are taking.

The effects of some drugs are changed by hyperbaric oxygen and your doctor may need to make some adjustments.

If you are scheduled to take any medicines during the time you are at the hyperbaric department, bring them so they can be taken as scheduled.

Food

Unless otherwise instructed, you should eat something before coming in for treatments. If you are diabetic, it is important that you maintain your diet and take your insulin as you usually do. If you take pills for your diabetes, continue on your regular medication schedule.

Smoking

Smokers are urged to stop during the weeks of hyperbaric treatment for best results. Smoking decreases the amount of oxygen getting to tissues. At the very least, do not smoke for two hours before and two hours after treatment.

Arrival Time

Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time and expect to spend about two hours to complete each treatment. Your family and friends are welcome to wait for you in the hyperbaric department waiting areas, hospital lobby or cafeteria. Sometimes treatment schedules are changed because of emergency hyperbaric treatments. If this happens, we will let you know as soon as possible.

What to Bring

We will provide you with 100 percent cotton garments to wear during treatment, and you may want to wear cotton socks (Shoes may be worn if covered appropriately. Shoe covers are provided by the hyperbaric department). Synthetic clothing and other personal items such as lotions, ointments, hairpieces or battery-powered devices like watches or hearing aids are not permitted inside the chamber for safety reasons.

If You Become Ill

If you come down with the flu, fever, sinus problem, etc., please contact the hyperbaric department before you come in for treatment. The physician or nurse will determine whether you can still have treatment that day.
