Transgender Health Care
The Transgender Health program at the University of Maryland Medical Center is dedicated to helping people explore options surrounding gender-affirming care.
Our team of healthcare professionals understands the emotional and physical challenges that patients and their families face during this transition.
It can be uncomfortable talking about gender, body image, emotions, puberty and sexuality. Our job is to listen and help identify what patients really need to feel comfortable in their own skin.
Our Team Approach to Transgender Health
The transgender healthcare team includes doctors from:
- Family medicine
- Pediatric and adult endocrinology
- Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN)
- Infectious diseases
Together they provide information, resources and services for patients and their families.
Medical Treatment
We provide primary care specially designed to support transgender health, including access and management of hormone therapy and puberty blockers. For people living with HIV, we provide concurrent HIV care and gender-affirming hormones. Transgender Family Heath Services providers specialize in caring for children and adolescents.
Trans-Affirming Surgery
Our team provides coordination of referrals for gender affirming surgeries. Our gynecologists also offer hysterectomies for transgender men.
Support and Education
We work closely with professionals who provide ongoing counseling for transgender patients and their families. Patients may receive support from transgender peer navigators as well as customized support.
Because feeling supported at home and maintaining open communication is critical, we offer guidance for families, friends and partners of our transgender clients. Patients and families are encouraged to participate in transgender-specific health education workshops.
Legal Services
Our team also works with the University of Maryland Clinical Law Program to assist patients who would like legal assistance for name changes.
Dental Services
Our dentists and dental students thrive to provide transgender-competent dental care to all our transgender and nonbinary clients.
