Wife Donates Kidney to Husband

 

Jim has been diabetic since the age of 17. He suffered complications of the disease ever since — his condition was particularly difficult to manage because he experienced frequent and extreme swings in his blood sugar. When he was in his 40s, his neighbor (a young microbiologist MD at UMMC) recommended he look into pancreas transplantation.

Jim had pancreas transplantation surgery in 1999; the transplanted pancreas restored Jim to full health, and he was no longer diabetic.

Although he was no longer diabetic, the effects of diabetes from previous years had damaged his kidneys. Twelve years after transplantation, Jim went into kidney failure. His wife, Susan, donated one of her kidneys to him.

Amid many other health problems, Jim was successfully treated for cancer at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and for internal bleeding at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

"My wife and I are very grateful for the expertise and the human connection we have with the people at UMMC. I am so grateful for the many times my life was saved at UMMC," Jim said.
