Emergency Liver Transplant Successful

Terrence Rickard was told that he "wasn't sick enough and was borderline too old" for a liver transplant by physicians in his hometown of Rochester, New York.

But, after a trip to Maryland to visit with family, his health and circumstances changed.

Terry lapsed into unconsciousness and was rushed to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. A team of doctors explained to him that he only had a few weeks to live without a liver transplant. Within 45 minutes, Terry was transferred to University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), where he met his liver transplant team.

Recalling the compassionate care received, Terry said, "Everyone was fantastic. They made me feel comfortable and confident that they were doing everything that could be done to get me transplanted."

Within 13 days, he received a donor liver from a deceased organ donor in New Jersey.

He was later transferred to the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute for physical and occupational therapy.

Now back in New York, Terry returns to Baltimore for regular follow-ups with UMMC transplant hepatologists. Terry uses his experience with the University of Maryland Medical System to counsel other liver transplant patients on the continuum of care needed – from pre- to post-transplant.
