Letter from the Director

Welcome to the University of Maryland Critical Care Medicine Fellowship! We are thrilled that you have taken time to explore all that our program has to offer. Created in 2008, this program has an impressive track record of training incredible critical care providers.

The University of Maryland Critical Care Fellowship provides critical care training for emergency medicine, internal medicine, and combined emergency medicine/internal medicine trainees. The training opportunities at the University of Maryland are unrivaled. The training begins with a multi-institutional month-long summer education block that focuses on procedural training, mechanical ventilation, and ultrasonography. Fellows have an opportunity to learn from and work with master educators from around the region, to network with experts in the field of critical care, and to learn side by side with other critical care trainees.

The clinical opportunities only grow exponentially after the summer education block. Fellows spend a considerable amount of time in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at the University of Maryland Medical Center at both the Downtown and the Midtown Campus. The MICU training is complimented by time in the Neuro ICU, Surgical ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Lung Rescue Unit, the Critical Care Resuscitation Unit, and the Trauma and Multi-trauma ICUs. Our elective opportunities round out our critical care clinical training and include right heart catheterization, the burn ICU, and ultrasound.

The patient acuity at the University of Maryland is high and this results in exposure to every disease process. The University of Maryland has a robust ECMO program and fellows will be involved in the management of both VV and VA ECMO. Because of their comprehensive critical care training, graduates of our program are heavily recruited to join the faculty of incredible programs throughout the country.

Outside of clinical duties, we recognize the importance of a broad critical care curriculum and research opportunities. We have designed a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional curriculum featuring expert critical care educators from around the country as well as Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion curriculum. Finally, our faculty engage in cutting edge critical care research and welcome the involvement of fellows in their research endeavors.

The University of Maryland is a supportive institution which fosters the holistic development of critical care fellows. This includes regular social activities, mentorship assignments, frequent MICU breakfasts, and monthly family-dinners at my home. When we are able to, we can frequently be found enjoying the highlights of this charming city including O's baseball or sharing a drink together at a local distillery. This is a city and a program that we have tremendous pride in. Our fellows graduate impeccably trained and are the type of physician that can handle any situation.
