Overview
The University of Maryland has a three-year accredited program in dermatology, which emphasizes the clinical, histological, and research aspects of the specialty. Our program is affiliated with the adjacent Veterans Affairs Medical Center and offers high patient volumes that include skin of color and the underserved populations. We have friendly attending faculties, resourceful staff, and supportive resident cohorts with 2-3 residents per year.
Clinical Education
Our department is located in the Redwood building, one block away from the University of Maryland Medical Center. We also have a satellite clinic in Columbia, Maryland. Residents also rotate at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Residents will be exposed to a variety of patient populations among these three locations.
Our program offers excellent surgical experience with our Mohs surgeons and at the VA, with residents leading most procedures routinely. All of our graduates excel at dermatologic surgery and are confident performing their own procedures in practice. Each resident will also be assigned his/her own patients in Resident Continuity Clinics throughout the three years with an average of 10 patients in a half day. A good dermatologist is equipped in the evaluation and diagnosis of numerous cutaneous disorders that may evolve overtime and with treatment. This knowledge is best obtained by following patients for months to years.
Our inpatient consult service covers the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of Maryland Medical Center, including the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. As a tertiary care academic hospital, we regularly evaluate and treat complex medical dermatologic diseases.
Elective time is available and offered to second and third year residents to pursue specific areas of interests or other related fields.
Didactics and Research
Each Tuesday morning, the residents have a protected half day of didactics. Lectures are led by both residents and faculty. Conferences like journal club and grand rounds are conducted on a monthly basis.
Research opportunities are available at the University of Maryland Department of Dermatology. Residents are encouraged to participate in a project during their residency years. Funding opportunities from the Maryland Dermatologic Society may be available to residents who apply.
Living in Baltimore
Most residents live in the various neighborhoods of Baltimore, such as Federal Hill, Locust Point, Fells Point, and Mt Vernon. Counties just outside of the city are also popular living areas for residents with families and children. Baltimore is a culturally fascinating city with an assortment of museums, concerts, theater, restaurants, and sports activities. It is a large metropolis with a small-town vibe. While the Inner Harbor is one of the highlights of Baltimore City, we are short distances away from Washington DC, the Chesapeake Bay, and Patapsco State Park, and within 3 hours from the Atlantic coast on the east and the Appalachians on the west.
We are located 15 minutes from BWI international airport for easy travel.
Student Electives
Elective time to pursue your own interests with dermatology or other related fields has been made available for senior residents, including time to schedule an away elective. This has been usually taken during the winter months, in such fields as pathology, immunofluorescence diagnoses, phototherapy or dermatological surgery.
Application Process
Residency applications will be accepted through ERAS only. Interviews are held in January by invitation only. We participate in the NRMP match. We will accept applications from individuals who have completed more than one post-graduate training year.
