Project Overview

Lumbar puncture (LP), also known as spinal tap, is a “blind” interventional procedure in the sense that the physician cannot visualize the intended target as the needle is advanced into the spine. For the young doctors in training and for obese patients, the LP can be a traumatic experience after repeated painful needle sticks into the spine. The emerging Hololens technology when combined with portable ultrasound imaging can transform this “blind” procedure into an image guided procedure.

Midpoint Progress Updates – October 2023

Over the past six months, the team has redefined the approach to optimizing the 3D position sensing between the Hololens and ultrasound probes. The team continues to make progress toward developing the software needed to carry out this project, and plans to begin testing the device within a few months.
