Advanced Practice Provider Critical Care Fellowship
The Advanced Practice Provider Critical Care Fellowship at University of Maryland Medical Center is a nine-month program offering rigorous clinical training and mentorship.
Our mission is to deliver structured educational and training experiences that emphasize advanced clinical decision-making in managing a diverse range of critically ill patients.
Upon program completion, our fellows are prepared to provide expert care for critically ill patients across various intensive care specialties.
Goals
- Enhance the clinical knowledge, skill set and expertise of our fellows to deliver safe, high-quality, evidence-based care to critically ill adults.
- Improve the confidence and competency of novice nurse practitioners in performing and providing therapeutic interventions.
- Cultivate well-rounded providers and leaders within the healthcare team.
Program Outcomes
12 cohorts have completed our APP Critical Care Fellowship program.
91% of graduates accept a critical care position after graduation; 90% accept positions at UMMC or the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
Out of all who continue at UMMC/Shock Trauma, 88% remain employed for at least two years post-graduation.
Curriculum
Our curriculum aims to support novice advanced practice providers in their professional growth and smooth their transition into clinical practice.
Didactic Education
Fellows earn over 90 hours of CEUs and CMEs through weekly lectures and critical care courses. Their didactic education also includes simulation-based learning, lectures, case studies, image review and professional development activities.
Clinical Rotations
Fellows will rotate through various critical care settings. These include the following:
- Neuro-Critical Care Unit
- Medical, Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Units
- Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit
- Critical Care Resuscitation Unit
- Infectious Disease Service
- Cardiology Service
- Stroke Neurology Service
Procedures
Procedures performed by fellows include, but are not limited to:
- Central and arterial line insertion
- Bedside ultrasound
- Bronchoscopy
- Lumbar puncture
- Chest tube insertion
