University of Maryland Medical Center Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine

The clinical training is comprised of twelve one-month blocks in subacute inpatient care, consultations in Geriatric Medicine, ambulatory clinics, long-term care, hospice and palliative care and electives.

Throughout the year, fellows have weekly half-day continuity clinics at the Baltimore VA Medical Center and longitudinal sessions in the Loch Raven CLC. Electives may be taken at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, University of Maryland Medical Center or through the Johns Hopkins University Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program (Bayview Campus). In these various settings, fellows learn about the methods of geriatric assessment, management of geriatric syndromes, working in an interdisciplinary team and special considerations in the care of the frail elderly.

One-half day per week is devoted to didactic sessions. There is a fellows' conference, during which core lectures are given by faculty members. Over the course of the year, fellows are expected to provide several presentations on topics in Geriatric Medicine. Board review sessions are also held in preparation for the Geriatric Medicine certification examination.

The weekly Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine conferences take place on the same afternoon; the conferences include journal clubs, research in progress and guest speakers. Fellows are also encouraged to attend Medical Grand Rounds and other conferences on campus.
