Facilities - Minimally Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopy) Fellowship

The University of Maryland Medical Center consists of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System. The School of Medicine is the fifth oldest medical school in the United States. It has developed into a leading research and educational institution, ranking among the leaders in terms of federal research funding and innovative, interdisciplinary investigative pursuits. The School of Medicine is a component of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

This campus comprises the professional schools of the University including the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and Graduate Programs. Research programs at the School of Medicine have grown on a overall basis and the University is ranked 12th in the nation for NIH funding for public institutions.

University of Maryland Medical System consists of the University of Maryland Hospital, the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedics Institute, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus and Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The Medical System is unique among major medical centers as it is a private health network caring for patients from the local community as well as those from every part of the state and region. It is the hub of an emergency medical transport system that effectively makes this large, inner city hospital a part of every small town in the area. It is an academic medical center affiliated with one of the oldest medical schools in America, a nationally known research institution working side-by-side with a highly respected patient care facility.

The University of Maryland Medical Center

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a large facility providing the broad range of innovative patient care services expected of a major tertiary care facility. The University of Maryland Cancer Center was established as an interdisciplinary program combining medical oncology, surgery, immunology, genetics, clinical pharmacology and radiotherapy. The medical center provides innovative therapy for patients with neoplastic disease and has superb research capabilities. The Shock Trauma Center provides a state-of-the-art clinical setting for this renowned program. Patients are transported by ambulance or helicopter from all parts of the region to the Center.

Mercy Medical Center

The Mercy Medical Center is an integrated component of the Division of General and Oncologic Surgery Residency Training Program. It is an academically oriented, University-affiliated institution with a 285-bed capacity. Located in downtown Baltimore, it is managed by the Sisters of Mercy with a mission of delivering health care to the community. The commitment of the Mercy Medical Center to education dates from the early 1800's when a medical school was actually a part of the hospital. The hospital has maintained and expanded its educational commitment in a large measure through its major affiliation with the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine.

Residents in the general surgery program rotate to the Mercy Medical Center in the first, second, and fourth clinical years of the program. Broad experience is provided in general and vascular surgery, urology, plastic surgery and other surgical specialties. A wide range of common surgical problems are managed along with some of the more complex surgical conditions. Excellent support facilities are available. There is close attending supervision with two full-time members of the Department along with an active and interested clinical attending staff. Several conferences are held at the Mercy Medical Center, all of which contribute to the education of our residents and students. There is a regular Grand Rounds conference, along with journal club and teaching rounds.

Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center was built on the campus of the University of Maryland Medical Center in 1994. It is adjacent to the University of Maryland Medical Center and is connected directly by a bridge. This state-of-the-art facility serves as the tertiary care hub for the VA Maryland Health Care System. Approximately 1200 major cases are completed annually including a complex case mix of gastrointestinal, vascular, thoracic and oncologic surgery. Residents rotate at the VA at the PGY-1,2 and chief levels. Conferences are combined with the University services.

MSTF

The Department of Surgery is assigned approximately 22,000 square feet of research space in the Medical School Teaching Facility and in the Baltimore VA Medical Center. Research programs with extramural support are established in gastrointestinal physiology, laparoscopic surgery, critical care, surgical oncology, transplantation, vascular and cardiothoracic TEST surgery.
