Teaching Conferences

Daily morning conferences are held 5 days each week and include faculty and fellow review of all fractures treated in our indications conference. The goal is to have every case a fellow treats during the year reviewed by the faculty and their peers. The indications conference is supplemented by a structured didactic educational program by the faculty that includes traditional lectures, interactive “chalk talks,” fellow conferences, and case presentations. Fellow conferences typically involve attending-level topics, such as performing intertrochanteric osteotomies for femoral neck nonunion, hands-on use of clamps for acetabular and pelvic fracture reduction, and other advanced topics of particular interest to fellows. In addition, we have a monthly series of saw bone surgical skills (five per year), cadaver surgical approach, and skills laboratories (10−12 per year).

Educate the Educators

One of the fellowship’s goals is to provide training in becoming an effective educator. Fellows gain significant experience with intraoperative teaching as they are exposed to multiple rotating residents. More uniquely, we strive for fellows to graduate from this program with the ability to lead effective cadaveric teaching sessions, chalk talks, and AO-type surgical skills laboratories. This is accomplished by providing direct feedback to the fellows at the completion of each teaching session on how to improve the educational experience for the residents.
