Fellows pose together at an off-campus social event.

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine program currently offers:

  • Five PCCM fellowship positions – three-year program (Program Code: 1252156F0)
  • One NIH/NHLBI PCCM fellowship track position – three-year program, with optional fourth year (Program Code: 1252156F1)

These are considered separate programs in the Match. Applicants may apply to either or both programs.

The NIH/NHLBI track is ideal for those pursuing a physician-scientist career. Those selected for the NIH/NHLBI track will have an additional interview day with NIH faculty.

Our program and division are committed to promoting and championing diversity, equity and inclusion. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals irrespective of gender, racial or ethnic background, religious affiliation or marital status. The AAMC Holistic Review process is utilized in candidate selection. In addition, all faculty have undergone unconscious bias training.

Salary and Benefits

Fellowship salary is determined by PGY status. A reasonable cost of living increase can be expected for subsequent years.

International Graduates

University of Maryland Medical Center does sponsor J-1 visas; other visas are not sponsored for fellowship training.

Prerequisites

Applicants must be board-eligible in Internal Medicine prior to starting our fellowship. This usually requires that the applicant is either currently enrolled in and will complete a three-year residency or has already completed a three-year residency in an approved training program in Internal Medicine in the United States prior to fellowship.

Our fellowship program includes required rotations at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. One of the requirements for rotating at the Veterans Administration is evidence of registration with the U.S. Selective Service. If matched into our program, you will be required to submit appropriate documents—either a Status Information Letter or an approved Exemption Document.

Application Process

Applications for all positions are only accepted through ERAS. We require that the following materials must be submitted:

  • ERAS Common Application, including email address
  • Curriculum vitae (ERAS format is acceptable)
  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical school transcript
  • Medical School Performance Evaluation - Dean's Letter
  • USMLE transcript and results
  • Photograph
  • If applicable, a copy of your ECFMG certificate and visa

For military civilian-sponsored applicants, please email the program director Van Holden, MD (vholden@som.umaryland.edu) directly.

Invitation to Interview

To achieve full consideration from our program, all applicants should submit the above required materials to ERAS in a timely manner.

Interview invitations are emailed to selected candidates via Interview Broker in July and August. We generally conduct interviews on Mondays throughout September and October.

We only send out invitations for the number of open interview slots available. We do not “over-invite.”

The order of invitations is not indicative of your candidacy. You will be notified of the final status of your application by mid-October.

In alignment with APCCMPD and AAIM, our fellowship interviews will be conducted exclusively virtually. We will not offer in-person interviews, open houses or program-sponsored second looks.

Following AAIM recommendations, we do not expect any post-interview communication. Please refrain from sending routine thank you notes or emails, as we are unable to respond to them. However, we welcome correspondence if you have specific questions about our program.

We recommend reviewing AAMC Accepting and Scheduling Interviews.
