Vascular Surgery Fellowship

The Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland offers an ACGME-approved fellowship training program in Vascular Surgery. Successful graduates are eligible for certification in Vascular Surgery as provided by the American Board of Surgery. The program is two years in length, and one candidate is selected annually through participation in the NIRMP matching program.

Goals: The goals of the Program are to provide a learning and training environment, which facilitates the development of expert vascular specialists who will have the tools and abilities to be leaders in both the clinical and academic community of vascular surgeons. These goals are accomplished by providing:

• Didactic instruction and basic laboratory research experience in vascular physiology and pathobiology.
• Instruction and direct clinical experience with the technology, clinical applications, and professional interpretation of all forms of noninvasive vascular testing.
• New imaging equipment and a new, fully-equipped operating theater will enhance our program of instruction in all forms of catheter-based interventional procedures.
• Instruction and direct clinical experience in the performance and interpretation of non-surgical vascular interventions including arteriography, angioplasty and stenting, and endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms and vascular trauma.
• Supervised performance of all forms of major non-cardiac vascular surgical procedures.

Our service to the regional and state-wide medical community has insured a growing volume of complex vascular surgical procedures in all major categories.

Training

The Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory is also part of the academic mission of the Division of Vascular Surgery. Noninvasive vascular technology is an integral part of the curriculum. As part of their training, vascular fellows rotate through the vascular laboratory and develop direct experience with all forms of noninvasive vascular testing. Vascular ultrasound students from several programs, both local and distant, intern at our Laboratory. Here they experience a wide range of vascular pathology and have access to a staff of experienced RVTs.

Regular CME conference activities are also provided for vascular technologists. The vascular laboratory also provides each technologist with the opportunity to be cross-trained in all aspects of noninvasive vascular testing, affording them a broad, comprehensive experience with the complex studies performed in our center.

* Following successful completion of the training program the trainee should be eligible for certification as an RVT and eligible for certification in Vascular Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. It is expected that the trainee would be a competitive candidate for the professional position of his or her choice, whether private practice, academic, or a combination.

Educational Activities
