The Nuclear Medicine Residency offers one or two first-year resident positions per year. Applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Information regarding this process can be obtained from the dean’s offices of all United States medical schools or from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

Applications are accepted from senior medical students and graduates of approved medical schools with house officer training.

We interview candidates for a position that starts in July of the next calendar year. Thus, candidates who are currently in a preliminary year internship are also encouraged to apply.

Prerequisites

A year of clinical internship is required before beginning our residency.

All graduates of foreign medical schools must have passed Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) prior to application.

Salary and Benefits

Residents in all University of Maryland programs receive a standard stipend based on their post graduate year.

Hospital stipends are set annually and are nationally competitive with those of other teaching programs.

Medical malpractice insurance is provided for Radiology house staff by the department through the University of Maryland Medical System's group plan.

In addition to an annual education fund, the program also pays residents’ final ABNM board examination fee, which is currently $2,900.

Application Checklist

A complete application includes the following:

  • ERAS application
  • Numerical USMLE scores
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Dean's letter
  • Official transcript
  • Three letters of recommendation from physicians who have knowledge of your clinical experience.

It is understood that the dean's letter for medical students will be forthcoming in November. All other elements must be submitted by October 15.

This program receive approximately 100 to 120 applications per slot available in any given year. The department acknowledges every application submitted.

Applications are evaluated for both personal and professional qualities with the goal of a diverse program filled with qualified candidates.

Approximately 15 percent of those with completed applications are interviewed. There is no quota for accepting University of Maryland students.

Applications must be complete with all documents—except the dean's letter for medical students—by October 15. Interviews are scheduled beginning around the first of November.

The department does not regard sex, religion or racial background as relevant factors when considering applicants for residency positions.
