Facilities - Nuclear Medicine Residency

The University of Maryland Medical Center is an 800-bed facility with a large out-patient department. The medical center cares for more than 35,000 inpatients and 300,000 outpatients each year. University of Maryland faculty physicians annually oversee more than 1 million patient visits (office, inpatient, and outpatient).

The Nuclear Medicine Division is well equipped with four advanced SPECT cameras and two PET/CT units. Approximately 10,000 nuclear medicine studies and procedures are performed each year. The department has expanded into a new inpatient facility and deployed a sophisticated hospital-wide picture archiving and communication system with computed radiology.

The VA Maryland Health Care System, Baltimore Division, is a part of the residency program. The 324-bed VA hospital is physically connected to the university hospital. The VA Diagnostic Imaging Department is a national leader in all-digital imaging, with advanced technologies, including PET, PET/CT, and a full array of nuclear medicine cameras.

Approximately 15 percent of the nuclear medicine resident's time is spent in the VA Maryland Health Care System, Baltimore Division. Extensive teaching files, including the ACR Learning Laboratory and a large departmental library, are available. More than 6,000 square feet of basic research space are assigned to the department in nearby medical school buildings.
