With subspecialists in every Otorhinolaryngology discipline, our residents benefit from a high clinical volume and broad surgical experience. Our rotation schedule provides an immersive and progressive education in each subspecialty that is tailored to resident growth.

The addition of physician extenders ensures that resident time is devoted to educational tasks, with less educationally beneficial tasks performed by the extenders under the guidance of the physicians.

Residency Sites

University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is our primary site where our residents spend most of their time. UMMC is a large, tertiary medical center that serves the Maryland community and beyond. UMMC is an NCI-accredited Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of few such centers in the nation.

The Baltimore VA Medical Center, which is connected by bridge to UMMC, gives our residents the opportunity to care for our nation’s veterans across the breadth of Otorhinolaryngology.

R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at UMMC is the nation's busiest trauma center.

During select rotations, residents will also participate in operative cases at University of Maryland Medical Center—Midtown and Ascension St. Agnes Hospital; both are within 10 minutes of our main campus and provide exposure to a community-based setting.

Resident Didactics

Resident didactics follows a two-year curriculum. Residents will complete blocks in general otology, rhinology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck, otology and neurotology and laryngology. Anatomy and temporal bone labs are also done throughout the year.

Resident Call Schedule

PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents take in-house call at UMMC every sixth night, on average. We transitioned to in-house call based on resident feedback and it has been felt to be a significant improvement over home call.

PGY-4 and PGY-5 residents take senior resident back up call from home.

Duty hour regulations are strictly adhered to for all levels. Faculty physicians provide oversight and supervision by phone and in person.
