Categorical Pediatrics Residency

The Pediatric Department's Categorical Pediatrics training program provides trainees with a comprehensive educational experience in the science and art of child health care. The department also offers residency training in Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine-Pediatrics, and 2 years of Preliminary Pediatrics for those pursuing Child Neurology or Neurodevelopmental Disabilities; for further information see tabs on left.

Our carefully balanced program trains graduates for the practice of primary care medicine as well as for competitive fellowship positions. Residents get broad experience in primary and tertiary care and in research. As a tertiary referral center, we provide learning opportunities in both neonatal and pediatric intensive care. Strong subspecialty divisions attract regional and statewide referrals. To complement tertiary care experiences, faculty from the Divisions of General Pediatrics, Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics, and Adolescent Medicine and from the Community Practice Program act as preceptors for residents providing primary care to patients.

Oversight of the educational program is achieved through the Education Task Force; a group of faculty and residents who monitor the residents' experience and work in real time to address any issues that affect residents as they arise. The program is built on a foundation of clinical work that provides all residents with the baseline knowledge and skills to be competent pediatricians as well as opportunities for further experiences tailored to their own future career goals. Complementing that foundation is a strong dedicated educational program that supports the residents' knowledge development with a variety of online and face-to-face learning opportunities. Our required scholarly activity provides support for every resident to engage in research and contribute to the knowledge in our field. The program meets all of the requirements of the Residency Review Committee for Pediatrics, and received continued full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in 2011.
